Guidance officers work with students on a wide range of issues, including:
- transition
- friendship
- family
- mental health e.g. anxiety
- behaviour
- classroom issues
- careers
- subject selection.
To address these issues the guidance officer may work with an individual, group or whole class. The process used when working with individuals is to complete a needs assessment, devise an intervention, and then case management. When appropriate, the guidance officer will facilitate referrals to clinical care providers.
Guidance officers also have an important leadership role, in collaboration with school administration teams, in supporting whole of school frameworks and systems to meet the health and wellbeing needs of all students in the school.
